Lægehåndbogen in English

About Doctor’s Handbook – in Danish: Lægehåndbogen

Lægehåndbogen (In English: "Doctor’s Handbook") is a medical website aimed primarily at Danish General Practitioners and secondarily at other health care professionals. The website contains approx 3,000 medical articles about different conditions and more than 2,000 illustrations. Every article in Lægehåndbogen is written and revised by a Danish specialist and a General Practitioner. The website is presented in Danish and is updated on a regular basis to make sure that the content is reliable and up to date.

Lægehåndbogen is available through the National Danish eHealth Portal in Denmark – www.sundhed.dk. All information in Lægehåndbogen is free of charge for doctors, patients, and citizens. Lægehåndbogen is an uncommercial, nonprofit website based at the Danish Medical Association and financed out of public funds. The website is initiated and owned by the Danish Regions and the five regions.

The overall ambition of Lægehåndbogen is to provide the General Practitioner with a clinical tool which is useful in his/hers busy working day. All information in Lægehåndbogen is presented in such a way that the amount of time it takes to get relevant information is minimal.

The purpose of Lægehåndbogen is to:

  • Provide General Practitioners in Denmark qualified and reliable online health information based on the principles of evidence-based medicine
  • Support the spread of new academic knowledge among health care professionals
  • Give health care professionals and patients a common basic information in relation to health and sickness - read more below about Patient´s Handbook for citizens

About Patient´s Handbook - in Danish: Patienthåndbogen

To ease access to qualified and reliable online health information for Danish patients and citizens, it was decided to give non-professionals their own version of Lægehåndbogen: Patienthåndbogen (in English: "Patient´s Handbook") launched September 2011.

Health information in Patienthåndbogen is also based on the principles of evidence-based medicine but communicated in a non-academic language and adjusted to the needs of non-professionals. Almost every condition described in Lægehåndbogen has a corresponding article in Patienthåndbogen aimed at citizens that can be approached via links in Lægehåndbogen. This allows health care professionals to easily access and print from Patienthåndbogen as a supplement when informing and advising patients and relatives about health related issues.

All articles in Patienthåndbogen are written and regularly revised by the same Danish specialists and General Practioners responsible for Lægehåndbogen´s content. This ensures the same high quality and correspondence between health information on both websites.

Patienthåndbogen is available through the National Danish eHealth Portal in Denmark – www.sundhed.dk and its content free of charge for doctors, patients, and citizens. Patienthåndbogen is an uncommercial, nonprofit website based at the Danish Medical Association and financed out of public funds. The website is initiated and owned by the Danish Regions and the five regions.

About the Danish Medical Association

The specific objectives of the Danish Medical Association, as stated in its statutes, are: to unite Danish doctors in order to protect the interests of the medical profession, and to serve as the body through which the influence of the medical profession may be exercised on general social issues in the best interest of health and the health care system.

While the Danish Medical Association is a lobby organization for Danish doctors it is also recognized by the Parliament, the national health administration, the ministries, and the private sector as an expert and advisory body for the authorities in medical questions and is represented in a number of official committees and working parties.
